How SEO ROI is calculated
SEO ROI is the gross profit organic search brings in, minus what you spend on SEO, divided by that spend. The calculator works it out month by month:
- Clicks at target rankings = monthly searches × the click-through rate for your expected position.
- Ramp-up: rankings take time, so traffic grows in a straight line until the month you expect to reach them.
- Leads = visits × visit-to-lead rate; customers = leads × lead-to-customer rate.
- Revenue = customers × customer value; gross profit = revenue × gross margin.
- ROI = (total gross profit − total SEO spend) ÷ total SEO spend over 12, 24 or 36 months.
Payback is the first month whose gross profit covers that month's SEO spend. Break-even is the first month cumulative gross profit covers everything spent so far. Rounding only happens on screen; the maths keeps full precision.
Worked example: a local service business
Using the local services starting point over 24 months:
- 2,500 monthly searches at position 3 × 11.0% click-through = 275 visits a month once ranked, reached after 4 months.
- 6% of visits enquire (17 leads) and 30% of those buy (5.0 customers a month).
- At $600 a job and 50% margin, that's $2,970 revenue and $1,485 gross profit a month, against $1,200 of SEO.
- Result: payback in month 4, break-even in month 8, and 16% ROI over 24 months ($4,613 net after SEO spend).
Change any input above to see your own numbers; the conservative scenario shows what happens if clicks fall by 40%.
What click-through rate to assume
The default curve comes from Backlinko's analysis of about 4 million Google results: 27.6% of clicks for position 1, 15.8% for 2, 11.0% for 3, falling to 2.4% for position 10. Page two and beyond are our own conservative assumptions (1% and 0.2%). You can edit every value.
Real click-through rates vary by query, brand and how much of the page ads and features take up, and they drop when an AI Overview appears. Ahrefs (February 2026) found AI Overviews correlate with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result, and Pew Research Center (July 2025) found people clicked a result on 8% of searches with an AI summary versus 15% without. If your keywords show AI answers, use the conservative scenario or lower the curve.
What the three scenarios mean
- Conservative: 40% fewer clicks, 25% lower conversion and 50% longer to rank. A sensible floor for keywords with AI Overviews or strong competitors.
- Expected: your inputs as entered.
- Optimistic: 25% more clicks, 15% higher conversion and 25% faster to rank.
Turning the estimate into a plan
A calculator can only use the numbers you give it. A real forecast starts from your actual keywords, current rankings, competitors and conversion data, then shows which pages to build first so leads arrive early in the ramp.

FAQ
SEO ROI Calculator questions
Take the gross profit from organic search (visits × conversion × customer value × margin), subtract what you spent on SEO, and divide by that spend. This calculator does it month by month so the ramp-up is included.
It depends on competition, how fast you can rank and what a customer is worth. Rankings usually build over several months, so break-even often comes well after the first gains; the calculator shows the month for your inputs in all three scenarios.
Start with an average curve, such as Backlinko's 27.6% for position 1 down to 2.4% for position 10, then adjust for your keywords. Branded searches get more clicks; searches with ads or AI Overviews get fewer.
When Google shows an AI Overview, fewer people click results: Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result, and Pew found clicks on 8% of searches with an AI summary versus 15% without. Being cited in AI answers matters more as a result.
Ads cost money for every click, so traffic stops when spend stops. SEO costs money up front and keeps sending traffic once you rank. The traffic value figure shows what your organic clicks would cost at your average cost per click.
One your margins can carry until break-even. Work backwards: try different monthly budgets here and keep the one that pays back within a timeframe you can fund. It also has to be enough to produce the pages and links the target rankings need.
